Packing

Thoughtful packing helps ensure a peaceful pilgrimage. Choose modest, comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes, bring layers for variable weather, and carry only what you truly need so your focus remains on the spiritual journey rather than your luggage.

Packing Guidelines for Your Pilgrimage

1) Luggage Allowance
Each pilgrim may bring one checked bag, one carry-on, and one personal item (such as a purse or small backpack). Size and weight limits vary by airline and are listed on your e-ticket. If you choose to check an additional bag, airline fees will apply and are at your personal expense.

2) Choosing Luggage
Lightweight, soft-sided luggage can save several pounds compared to hard-shell suitcases. If you don’t need the extra protection that hard luggage provides, a quality travel duffel can give you a valuable weight advantage—and a little extra room for souvenirs from your pilgrimage.

3) Luggage Locks
If you wish to lock your checked luggage, use TSA-approved locks only. If an inspection is required and your bag has a non-TSA lock, it may be cut open. Alternatively, you can use zip ties or wire ties; however, note that TSA will not replace them once removed. [Click here] to learn more about TSA-approved locks.

4) Weather Preparation
Before departure, take a few minutes to review average temperatures and rainfall for your pilgrimage destinations. Pack clothing appropriate to the season and climate.

5) Modest Attire for Sacred Sites
Many religious sites require modest dress. Please pack clothing that covers shoulders and knees for entry into churches and shrines. A lightweight scarf or sarong can help women cover quickly when needed, and men should be prepared with shirts that have sleeves. Outside of sacred venues, casual attire is appropriate in most settings.

6) Comfortable, Broken-In Shoes
Pilgrimages often include long days of walking—sometimes on cobblestone streets, uneven surfaces, or hilly terrain. Bring comfortable, well-broken-in walking shoes that provide good support. Avoid brand-new footwear, as it can cause blisters or discomfort. A second pair of shoes or sandals can also be helpful to give your feet a break in the evenings.
