The Transformative Power of Pilgrimage: Lessons from St. Thérèse of Lisieux

“Before my journey to Rome I had not felt any special devotion to this Saint, but on visiting the house where she was martyred, and on hearing her proclaimed ‘Queen of Harmony’, I felt more than devotion to her; I felt real love as for a friend. She became my chosen patroness as well as the keeper of my most intimate thoughts....”
— St. Thérèse of Lisieux, describing the grace she received at age 14 during her pilgrimage to Rome and her visit to St. Cecilia’s home (The Story of a Soul).
"... I saw splendid monuments; I studied the countless wonders of art and religion; and better than all, I stood on the very soil trodden by the Apostles and bedewed with the blood of Martyrs, and my soul grew strong by contact with those holy things.”
— St. Thérèse of Lisieux, recalling her 1887 pilgrimage to Rome with her father Louis, her sister Céline, and a diocesan group (The Story of a Soul)

Itinerary

Dulles International Airport
Day 1
Pilgrimage Mass and Departure
Our pilgrimage begins with a late-morning Mass at the parish, asking God’s blessing upon our journey and all who will travel with us. After Mass, we will board our charter motorcoach for Dulles International Airport and depart on our overnight flight to Sarajevo, with meals served on board.
Day 2
Sarajevo — “The frontier where Catholicism survived between East and West.”
Our pilgrimage begins in Sarajevo, a city shaped by centuries of encounter between Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and the cultures of East and West. After arriving around midday, we will meet our local guide and driver and travel into the historic center of the city. Our first pilgrimage stop will be Sacred Heart Cathedral, the principal Catholic church of Sarajevo, where we will celebrate Mass and give thanks for a safe journey as we begin our days of pilgrimage together.
After Mass, pilgrims will have free time to explore Sarajevo’s lively pedestrian streets and historic old town. This is an opportunity to relax at one of the city’s cafés, stroll through the markets and narrow streets, and experience the remarkable blend of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and modern influences that make Sarajevo unlike any other European capital.
At approximately 6:00 PM, we will check into our hotel and have time to settle in before gathering for our first dinner together, officially beginning our pilgrimage through Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Adriatic Coast.

Sacred Heart Cathedral, Sarajevo

Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church
Day 3
Sarajevo to Medjugorje
After breakfast and hotel check-out, we will spend the morning continuing our exploration of Sarajevo’s rich Catholic heritage. We will celebrate Mass at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, one of the city’s most important Catholic churches, and visit the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius and its seminary, a site connected with St. John Paul II’s historic 1997 visit to Sarajevo. A short guided tour will then introduce us to more of Sarajevo’s remarkable history and its role as a meeting place of cultures, religions, and empires.
Following some free time for lunch and a final opportunity to enjoy the city, we will depart Sarajevo in the early afternoon and travel south through the beautiful landscapes of Bosnia and Herzegovina toward Medjugorje. After a rest stop along the way, we expect to arrive in Medjugorje around 5:30 PM, where we will check into our hotel and settle in before dinner. The evening will be free, giving pilgrims their first opportunity to experience the peaceful atmosphere of this renowned Marian pilgrimage destination.
Days 4-7
Medjugorje — Days of Prayer, Pilgrimage, and Reflection
Our four days in Medjugorje will provide a beautiful opportunity to step away from the pace of ordinary life and enter more deeply into prayer, reflection, and the spiritual life of this renowned Marian pilgrimage destination. Our time will include opportunities to visit Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain, participate in the prayer and liturgical life of St. James Church, attend portions of the parish evening program, and enjoy periods of quiet personal prayer. When available, we will also hope to include a witness talk or other special spiritual encounter during our stay.
While based in Medjugorje, we will also take time to experience some of the beauty and history of the surrounding region, including a guided visit to Mostar’s historic center and an excursion to the scenic Kravice Waterfalls. The exact order of activities may vary depending on local conditions, parish schedules, weather, and availability, allowing us to remain flexible while preserving the prayerful and unhurried spirit of these days.

Apparition Hill, Medjugorje

Korcula Old Town
Day 8
Medjugorje to Korčula
After breakfast, we will depart Medjugorje and journey toward the Adriatic coast, continuing by ferry to the beautiful island of Korčula. The scenic transfer will take us through some of the most picturesque landscapes of the region before we arrive around lunchtime. Once on the island, we will enjoy free time for lunch along Korčula’s waterfront promenade, with its cafés, sea views, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.
The afternoon will be devoted to a walking pilgrimage through Korčula’s historic Old Town, visiting several of its churches and sacred sites, including the Church of St. Anthony, before celebrating Mass at St. Mark’s Cathedral. There will also be time to wander the waterfront, enjoy a café, and take in the charm of this beautifully preserved Adriatic town. In the early evening, we will check into our hotel in Orebić and gather for dinner, followed by an opportunity to enjoy the sunset along the waterfront.
Day 9
Badija Island & Korčula
After breakfast, we will walk to the harbor and board a local boat for the short ride to Badija Island, a peaceful island just off the coast of Korčula. Here we will visit the Franciscan Monastery of the Assumption of Mary, its historic church and Gothic cloister, and the Chapel of St. Catherine overlooking the island. There will also be time for prayer, reflection, and quiet walks along the wooded paths and shoreline before returning by boat to Korčula Town.
The afternoon will be intentionally relaxed, allowing pilgrims to enjoy Korčula at their own pace. Following lunch, we will celebrate Mass at St. Mark’s Cathedral and then have free time to explore the Old Town’s narrow lanes, walk along the waterfront, relax at a seaside café, or join an optional rosary or spiritual reflection. We will ferry back to Orebić for a group dinner in the Old Town.

Franciscan Monastery, Badija Island

Church of St. Blaise, Ston
Day 10
Orebić and Ston to Dubrovnik
After breakfast and hotel check-out, we will visit the Franciscan Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels near Orebić. Perched high above the Adriatic, the monastery offers beautiful views back toward Korčula Island and provides a peaceful setting for prayer. We will visit the monastery and, pending confirmation, celebrate Mass there before continuing south toward the historic town of Ston.
In Ston, pilgrims will have several hours for lunch and free time to explore this remarkable fortified medieval town. Highlights include the Church of St. Blaise, charming stone streets, local shops and cafés, and views of the famous Walls of Ston, among the most impressive defensive walls in Europe. In the late afternoon, we will depart for Dubrovnik, arriving at our hotel in the Dubrovnik region in time to check in and enjoy dinner together.
Day 11
Dubrovnik
Our final full day of pilgrimage will be spent exploring Dubrovnik, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved historic cities along the Adriatic. A guided walking tour through the magnificent Old Town will introduce us to its rich Catholic heritage, including Dubrovnik Cathedral, the Church of St. Blaise, the Franciscan Monastery and historic pharmacy, the Dominican Monastery, and the Church of St. Ignatius at the top of the famous Jesuit Staircase. We also hope to celebrate Mass in the Old Town, pending final confirmation.
The afternoon will be free to enjoy Dubrovnik at a more relaxed pace. Pilgrims may walk the ancient city walls, explore the harbor, visit additional churches and monasteries, browse local shops, enjoy a café, or take the cable car for sweeping views over the Old Town and Adriatic Sea. In the evening, we will gather for our final pilgrim dinner, sharing one last meal together as we reflect on the many graces, friendships, and experiences of our journey.
